How to read it
Light travels left to right and meets the convex front of the lens first. A real object sits to the left, so its incident vergence L is negative; the lens adds its power (L′ = L + F) and the image forms where L′ sends the light, measured from the back vertex. Objects nearer than about 6 m (20 ft) are drawn as a tree; more distant objects, near optical infinity, become the Orion constellation. A real image is drawn with solid rays, a virtual image with dashed rays.
