…a great way to stay on top of the dynamic field of Opticianry and make some friends in the process.
As some of you may be aware, Essilor purchased 50% of Shamir Insight. Let me start by saying that I absolutely love the Shamir Autograph II. It is my go-to lens. I have had zero complaints from patients. I’ve compared them to Essilor’s Physio Enhanced and although it is pretty decent, there really isn’t a comparison. Shamir wins hands down. So upon hearing this news, I was a little disappointed. Too many become monolithic giants who don’t care about workers or patients. A certain Volde-mart Vision Center comes to mind. I really didn’t understand the decision. Shamir is a kibbutz. Their entire way of life could be threatened if Essilor owned them. I thought that it was possible that the kibbutz was dissolving/disbanding. I called Shamir Insight to find out. I was patched through to a person named Raanan to whom I expressed my concerns. I didn’t want to see another company get swallowed up etc… I had a pretty good discussion with him. I didn’t find out until midway through the conversation that I was speaking Raanan Naftalovich, the CEO! He assured me that the kibbutz is alive and kicking and that Essilor agreed to certain terms that ensures that Shamir Insight retains their autonomy and will remain pretty much the same. Essilor is not a majority share holder and there are termination agreements should they decide to part ways. After speaking with him I definitely felt better about how it bodes for the independent ECP. While I am not delighted that they teamed with Essilor. I don’t think it is bad (especially the reasoning behind the decision). Raanan even joked that if Shamir Insight was to disappoint, to call and give him a hard time. To have a CEO that is accessible and willing to hear even from “small-potatoes” Al from New Jersey, is refreshing.
