…a great way to stay on top of the dynamic field of Opticianry and make some friends in the process.
There is something really strange happening in the major news outlets. It’s getting harder and harder to find news sources that actually try to report news.
The surge in opinion media has affected the way we as regular citizens get our information. A notorious example is the use of weasel words as used by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. The use of weasel words needs to be eliminated because it presents a story as having two sides which is clearly NOT the case. These faux debates have added an element of uncertainty to public discourse. To the untrained eye, a real debate may seem to be present. Since most people like to appear balanced, many will gravitate to the middle position of an argument if they are not knowledgeable in that area of expertise. This gives the false illusion of balance. The Flat Earth Society still doesn’t have a leg to stand on, “Creation Science” or “Intelligent Design” are not science and shouldn’t be taught alongside science.
While this may seem to some as an extreme left position, it isn’t! There is no current debate in science as to whether the earth is round or flat, or creation science/intelligent design are competing theories to evolution. This trend of taking known knowledge and leaving doubt in it’s wake leaves people to be influenced in less than honorable ways. In topics many people don’t know, it would be very easy to shift the unsuspecting public’s opinion.
News organizations need to be critical of all political parties and keep our elected official’s feet to the fire. There really isn’t any other way to do journalism. While it can be argued that it is impossible to avoid opining about issues, stating that your work is objective when it clearly isn’t, is misleading. “The fish is the last to discover water” is a great saying that illustrates this point.
