You do what you can. When things are better, do consider joining an organization. Sometimes the money at first seems a lot, but there are perks. By joining the OAA you can get discounts on occupational insurance, the OANJ provides discounts for Continuing Education (CE) credits and joining the CLSA gives you access to many free CE credits. You may pay 120 for the membership (OANJ for example) and yet save $50 or $60 which makes your membership about $60 or $70. You don't have to join all of them either. Just pick one that you think furthers opticianry the best. In my case, the state organization (OANJ) is the most important followed by the OAA and CLSA. Getting certified yourself, if you are not in a licensed state, is also a means to furthering opticianry. If you have the ABO, go for the ABO-AC etc... Educating yourself as much as possible is by far the best means of furthering opticianry and only requires a library card at a good library. If you are up to it, the ATO can always use some extra hands. All that would be required of you is your time.
