…a great way to stay on top of the dynamic field of Opticianry and make some friends in the process.
Up until a week ago, I couldn’t tell you what an RSS feed was and why it would benefit you as you browse the web. Well, I’m going to lay it all out for you so you can take advantage of it if a site you enjoy going to has this capability. First, RSS stands for many things depending on version, but essentially “Really Simple Syndication” in the current version (2.0). So why is it the neatest thing since sliced bread? It allows you stay connected to a site in a passive way. If you don’t visit a site everyday, but still want to know if someone wrote something worth looking at, RSS is for you. RSS is a subscription to all of the posts in a forum and/or blog arranged from most recent. How do you subscribe, you ask? Well that depends on what you use to look at the internet. I use a variety of web browsers such as Mozilla 1.x, Firefox, Opera, Netscape, and Internet Explorer (I use IE very rarely).
Most of you are probably familiar with IE. IE currently does not support RSS, but will in the future. For those of you willing to try a new browser, download either Firefox, Opera or Netscape. Next what you’ll see depends on the browser. If you visit this site using Firefox you’ll see what looks like a little satelite transmitting on the lower right hand corner. If you click on that, you’ll be asked whether you want to subscribe via a “Live Bookmark.” The bookmark will have that same symbol as the one in the lower right hand corner.
Through magic and sorcery, all of the blog posts or forum posts will show up on the bookmark. For Netscape and Opera, you will see the words RSS in the address bar (the part with http://…) after the address . So by checking your live feed, you can see whether someone has replied to a post or not, saving time. Now all you get through the feed is a summary (depending if you use something like Outlook – just a link if you use a browser), but at least you can see if it is something you are interested in. This allows for speedy propogation of information. This is a great way to know whether or not a job has been posted etc.. so you don’t miss a beat.
Feel free to contact me and I’ll help as best as I can. Just FYI, you have to subscribe to both the blog and the forum. They are not the same thing. Hope you find RSS as cool as I do.
